Flowers in the snow — hellebore opens its nodding, rose-like blooms in late winter, when the garden has nothing else to say, and holds them for weeks above leathery evergreen leaves. The first hungry bees of the year find it, and so does anyone starved for bloom.
In dry shade under trees it is close to permanent: long-lived, evergreen, and untouched by deer and rabbits, since every part is toxic — this is a plant admired, never grazed. Left alone it self-sows into drifts. Plant it where you pass in winter, not where summer distracts you.
