One fertile dozen from our free-ranging mixed flock — the hens in the photographs on The Farm. A colourful barnyard blend chosen for hardiness and temperament, so the chicks come out a surprise. Not going in boxes this season; the eggs are staying here under our own broodies.
twenty bulbils
The onion that plants itself: each stalk sets a crown of top bulbils that bows over and walks the bed a step at a time. Press them in an inch deep in autumn or early spring and pull green onions for most of the year. Hardy to zone 3, and these came off our own rows. Not going in boxes this season — the crop is staying here to widen the rows.
