Maiden Grass is a season in four acts: a green fountain all summer, plumes by August, then a wheat-gold winter sculpture that rattles and sways until spring. Few plants give a garden this much architecture for this little effort — or look better backlit by low sun.
At four to eight feet it screens a patio faster than any hedge, asks little water once settled, and stands as winter cover while birds work the seed heads. Choose a named sterile cultivar — the responsible kind — and give it full sun and a front-row corner.
