Pieris (Andromeda)
Pieris japonica
Family Ericaceae

Pieris refuses to have an off season — chains of white or pink bells in early spring, new growth that emerges glossy red, evergreen structure all year, and next spring's flower buds hanging like beadwork through winter. It is the four-season shrub for the acid, shaded bed.
It keeps company naturally with azaleas and rhododendrons, wanting the same dappled shade and acid ground, and deer generally leave it alone — like its heath-family kin it is toxic, a shrub to admire rather than taste. Early bees visit the bells. Give the shady foundation something with a calendar.
