The illustrated growing guide
Air Plant
Tillandsia spp.
Family Bromeliaceae
Est. zones 9-11

The plant that grows on air (and weekly soakings) — no soil, mounted on driftwood or set in a bowl. The single rule that kills most of them: after soaking, turn them upside down and let water drain out, then dry within a few hours, or the base rots. Each plant blooms once, makes pups, and the pups carry on.

We don’t print Tillandsia spp. The closest we have is Tillandsia ionantha (“Air Plant”) in the Houseplants Vol. 2 collection — the same genus, Tillandsia, not the same species.

Edibility, identification, and traditional-use notes here are general reference — not medical or veterinary advice, and not a claim that any plant treats or prevents anything. Medicinal ratings record how strongly a plant features in herbal tradition, nothing more. Never eat or dose a plant you have not positively identified. More on how to use this library.

Questions
Air Plant questions, answered straight.
Is air plant safe for kids and pets?
Air Plant is commonly eaten and isn't considered toxic, but "commonly eaten" isn't a guarantee for any particular person or animal — allergies, quantity, and which part you eat all matter. One caveat on this one: Safe for pets. Never eat a plant you haven't positively identified, and check with a vet before letting pets or livestock graze anything new.
How do you propagate air plant?
Stem/leaf cuttings, division, or pups.
